Let’s Go Phish

Penetration testing is an exciting informative process that all institutions should perform. Regardless of whether the institution is in the public or private sector, penetration testing is a must. Earlier this year our team was able to perform a penetration test on the United States Forest Service, specifically the Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) Program. … Continue reading Let’s Go Phish

About

The intention of this site is to give the viewer an idea of who I am and what I have done. The reality is, who I am is much more than images, text, or links. I wear many ‘hats’ including:

I have many characteristics that make me a uniquely interesting person. I am not afraid to fail. I dare to do just about anything. I am not afraid to be vulnerable. I like to be the leader, and I strive to develop leadership skills. One of my greatest weaknesses is that I do not care what other people think, however I do care about other people…

My life’s experiences enlighten me to take it as it is, leave it as it was, or do something about it. I relate to Nietzsche, “You have your way. I have my way. As for the right way, the correct way, and the only way, it does not exist.”

There have been countless moments in my life I wish I had a snapshot of. How fascinating it would be to have the ability to capture facial expressions without the click of a button. Maybe Google could flip that flop with Google Glass and make this a reality. When I explained how I wanted to announce our new arrival to my wife, the expression on her face said enough. Apparently, a baby announcement involves less tech and more Pinterest. How was I to know that a “Capture the Flag” was out of the question?

In order to persuade my wife, I designed the last flag first. Of course I did not tell her this was a flag for the CTF, I simply showed her the picture I designed. She approved, and I secretly began the conversion of a boring announcement into an exciting Capture the Flag challenge. The design includes very basic examples of cryptography, forensics, stenography and decoding. It was challenging deploying this CTF using Google Sites due to the limitations and zero JavaScript capabilities. To check out the CTF visit: https://sites.google.com/site/porterhousectf/.

I learned quickly after asking my older children to complete the simple Capture the Flag, the challenges needed to simple. We deployed this CTF on our families, who struggled, but successfully completed.

Earlier this year after finding out another new arrival was on the way, we decided to mix things up using a little acting and 25 OzoBots ozobotto make our announcement. These two projects both had relevant learning outcomes that our family will benefit from. These same learning outcomes can be applied to the professional realm. For instance, using a non-traditional platform to deliver a message can generate spontaneous creativity and increase engagement. Make it nerdy, geeky, techy, or whatever ‘y’, just do it different.

Cyber Defense

UPDATE: After a long debrief with the Red Team, who commented as “feeling boxed in“, the results are in and our team placed third. Bringing home a win at RMCCDC 2018 was our goal. As some of us move on to graduate school and our career, these memories of success are important!

The Cyber Defense Competitions Club (CDCC) is a student-led organization that competes in cyber defense challenges and competitions.

Jon VanDam, Chen, Matt Guerrero, Jared Porter after placing in the top 50 for Build The Shield by Microsoft.

The focus of this club is to provide a hands-on learning environment for those seeking experience in Information Security.

Weekly club meetings offer practical activities surrounding topics in information security, and are open to all. These practice sessions prepare participants for security competitions on a state, national, and international level. With a computer in hand, everyone can participate and no one will leave without learning something new.

Our success in years past has resulted in a driving force that has led us to compete in the Rocky Mountain Regional Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition and the National Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition and NIATEC.

Mitch, Felix, Tamara, and Jared at NIATEC 2017 bring home 3rd place and a spot at RMCCDC to compete for Nationals!
